VINO FINO BLIND TASTING OF SEMILLONS

Notes by
GERALD WEISL
wine merchant
The Semillon grape is not on the radar of most wine drinkers,
though it's an important variety in France's Bordeaux region.
The sweet white wines made in the Sauternes area some 24 miles south of the city
of Bordeaux are typically predominantly Semillon. These are made from
grapes picked late in the season in hopes the humid weather will encourage the
onset of a mold called Botrytis Cinerea, or pourriture noble as the
French call it. Noble rot.
Semillon has been cultivated in Australia since the 1800s and in the early 19th
Century it accounted for most of the vineyard area in South Africa. Now
we're told it comprises just 1% of South African vineyard area. Chile had
quite a bit of it as recently as the 1950s.
As of 2021 California had 569 acres of Semillon planted.
South Africa, by the way, has a darker-skinned Semillon which is known as
Semillon Gris.
What's odd, we're told, is that a vine producing reddish-skinned grapes one year
might produce bright green fruit the next!
In Australia's Hunter Valley Semillon makes some remarkable dry wines. The
grapes are usually harvested at low sugar levels with, of course, high acidity.
Today Australia has more than 11,000 acres of Semillon but this is merely 3.4%
of vineyard plantings Down Under.
If you taste a young, entry-level Australian Semillon, you'd likely dismiss the
grape as being unimportant.
But some wineries hold onto their higher-tier Semillons, knowing the wines turn
into something far more complex with proper aging.
A friend of ours gave a class on wine basics and there was one a young Semillon
in the tasting line-up. We had explained to her the longevity of good
Semillon wines. The class was audited by a Master Sommelier who
"corrected" her about Semillon, dismissing it as a wine with virtually
no cellaring potential.
We shared that notion with a prominent Australian vintner and received a
thousand word essay taking the Master Somm to task and explaining that some of
their dry Semillon wines can easily age for several decades, while Sauternes can
go 40 or 50+ years.
Our flight of Semillons had three South Africans wines and 5 from Australia.
In most of our blind-tastings, you'll have one or two wines well ahead of the
group, a handful in the middle and a wine or two well behind the group.
In this tasting, First Place was a mere 6 points ahead of our 8th Place wine!
Had one taster rated the last place wine as their top choice instead of as their
last place wine, that 8th Place finisher would have won the tasting!
During the tasting, which is usually fairly quiet to allow the participants to
evaluate the wines, a few tasters mentioned the wines being difficult to rank
since they were more similar than different.
I'm not sure I would agree, as I found my top wines to be more complex than the
rest.

But the wines were well-made and all were technically sound.
Here's what we found:

8th Place: ALHEIT VINEYARDS 2016 Franschhoek
"La Colline Vineyard" SEMILLON
Darker in color than the other wines in the tasting, this brassy-hued
wine was clear in appearance. Its color is likely due to in part to having
more than 10% Semillon Gris and that it's one of the older wines in the
flight. I detected some sweetly honeyed notes a baked apple aromas, with a
notation wondering if it was a bit older. This is dry and has a good level
of acidity. Medium+ bodied. Lots of texture on the palate with that
honeyed element in terms of flavors. I did not have it highly rated for
its aromas, but the wine got higher marks for its depth of flavor and
intensity.
Overall a One and a Half Star wine on my three star scale, no stars being a
standard or ordinary wine.

7th Place: GABRIËLSKLOOF 2018 Western Cape "Magdalena"
"The Landscape Series" SEMILLON
Clear in appearance with medium yellow color, the fragrances here were a
bit less distinctive with a faint suggestion of a toasty character. It
struck me as older or more developed, but was a bit shy in terms of its
aromatics. This is dry and has fairly high acidity, so perhaps it will
blossom further with additional bottle aging? Medium bodied with good
flavors showing some of the typical "waxy" character we identify as
Semillon.
One star presently.

6th Place: SADIE FAMILY WINES 2021 Citrusdalberg
"Kokerboom" SEMILLON
Medium straw in color and clear in appearance, this wine displays aromas
reminiscent of hay or straw with a touch of a honeyed note. It's dry and
moderately acidic with medium body. Ripe fruit notes on the palate, though
with a suggestion of poached pear flavors. We gave this one star presently
and suspect it's a baby and need more time to really justify its lofty price.

5th Place: ASHBROOK ESTATE 2020 Wilyabrup Margaret River SEMILLON
Light straw coloring and clear in appearance, there's that straw and hay
fragrance on display here. Dry and fairly tart, it's medium to
medium-light bodied. The flavors are a shade deeper than expected from the
aromatics, showing some ripe, poached pear notes. The flavors are pleasant
and good as far as they go. I gave this 3/4s of a star mainly due to its
seeming lack of intensity. But as we know, Semillon can blossom with time,
so we should not sell this short.

4th Place: BROKENWOOD 2016 Hunter Valley "Oakey Creek"
SEMILLON
Clear in appearance with medium straw color, this displayed some cooked
or stewed fruit aromas with a honeyed note...perfectly pleasant on the nose.
It's got plenty of acidity and is dry, being medium-light on the palate.
It's surprisingly deep on the palate, though, with good fruit and remarkable
length. I gave it two stars and suspect this will continue to develop with
further aging.

3rd Place: TYRRELL'S 2016 Hunter Valley "HVD Vineyard"
SEMILLON
Medium straw in color and clear in appearance, the aromatics suggested a
wine of greater complexity with some mildly toasty fragrances and some pear-like
aromas. It's dry and crisp on the palate with medium body. I thought
the flavors were less intense than had been promised by the nose, so my ranking
was a bit lukewarm. I gave it a one star rating as the wine seemed simpler
on the palate than expected from its aromatics. Time may change that.

2nd Place: TYRRELL'S 2016 Hunter Valley "Vat 1 Winemaker's
Selection" SEMILLON
Light straw in color and clear in appearance, this had a simple
fragrance being clean and with mild fruit aromas. It did not promise much
on the nose and yet the flavors were far more satisfying. Dry and crisply
acidic, it's elegant with bright, youthful fruit flavors and nice length.
I gave it one and a half stars, but know this will continue to evolve and become
a remarkable wine.

1st Place: BROKENWOOD 2014 Hunter Valley "ILR Reserve" SEMILLON
Clear in appearance with medium straw color, this showed plenty of apple
and pear-like fruit with a mildly toasty character...nicely complex on the
nose. Dry and tart on the palate and being medium+ to full-bodied.
The flavors are the most profound in the tasting with the pear and apple notes
along with a toasty element. Very fine. Nicely developed and likely
able to cellar for additional time. Two+ stars. Tops!
