1999 CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET

A Blind Tasting Comparison

Having conducted a blind-tasting of Puligny-Montrachets some months ago,
we were interested to have a look at some wines from neighboring
Chassagne-Montrachet. The 1999 vintage is highly regarded by growers, old
timers comparing this harvest to the legendary 1959 vintage.
We assembled a set of eight wines from various estates and producers and we had
a rather interesting tasting.
One wine was "old" and tired while another was more representative of
a Sauvignon Blanc-based white Bordeaux than it was Chassagne-Montrachet.
One was was the class of the tasting, while a trio of wines was well behind the
winner, but well ahead of the rest of the pack.
Here's what we found:

8th Place: LOUIS JADOT 1999 "Les Grandes Ruchottes"
 One taster described this poor wine as reminiscent of "hay and lilac fragrances."
Another person found it rather "mature and molasses-like." A
third person pegged it as "Maderized, with a fourth saying "It was
'finished' before it got started." Another found "candied
shoe polish with burnt butterscotch."
The wine struck me, initially, as an old-fashioned, appley Meursault, but it
clearly faded and was past its prime, having oxidized, sherry-like aromas.
We frequently read that Louis Jadot has good wines, but we have rarely
encountered stellar bottles from this firm. Perhaps this was damaged in
transit? Poor.
7th Place: MICHEL COUTOUX 1999 "Les Chenevottes"
 "This is a really citric wine, almost as though there was a lemon in
the barrel!" said one critic. Another found "Strange wood
notes...cedar...grassy, Sauvignon Blanc-like mid-palate with a lemon spice
finish." A third found "Green apple, lemon, paint aromas and
it's broad and immense, not focused." Another panel member
encountered SO2 and more SO2."
Someone else said it has "burnt matchstick notes," with a couple of
other tasters finding "musty" notes here.
I was not sensitive to the musty character nor the SO2
character. This simply struck me as a Sauvignon-based white wine. It
was very reminiscent of the Smith Haut Lafitte wine we'd had in our 1999
Pessac-Leognan tasting in the not-too-distant past. I wondered if this was an authentic
bottle of Coutoux's
wine or did they really put Chassagne-Montrachet in this bottle?
6th Place: COLIN-DELEGER 1999 "Les Chenevottes"
Many tasters found this wine to be quite bitter. One person said it
had "soy bean aromas and flavors." Someone else found a lot of
"vanilla," while another person encountered "crisp, green apple
in spades, but too many of them!" One panel member found "toasty
lemon notes and wet paper." Another person said "It's nothing
special and it's too acidic." A final critic described the acid as
"steely with a bitter greens character."
I liked the mildly toasty bouquet and honeyed notes of the aromas. I also
found a pear-like fruit note here. The wine was less interesting on the
palate, having a tiny bit of toast up front, but not much fruit or depth.
Perhaps cellaring will add something to this wine. Perhaps not.
5th Place: COLIN-DELEGER 1999 "Les Chaumes"
 One person described this as having a "fat texture, with creamy,
citrusy notes, some minerally fruit and a bit of oak, though it's got a short,
alcoholic finish." Another taster said "It's really closed,
showing nothing on the palate and nose, though it's not a shallow
wine." Someone else echoed these sentiments, saying "It's
reticent and undefined on the nose, with a linear taste expression."
More positively, one taster found this to be "Flashy, with good purity of
fruit and some aging potential." A final word from someone:
"Nice and crisp, simple, but straightforward."
I found some appley fruit along with a minerally note and some pleasantly toasty
oak. The wine was nice on the palate, being elegant. There are some
toasty oak flavors, a bit of vanilla and a mildly leesy finish. I gave it
a one-and-a-half star rating on my three star scale. No stars is a
standard quality wine (or worse).
4th Place: RAMONET 1999 "Les Vergers"
"This shows lemon notes, mineral notes, lemon oil, mild hints of honey
with an oak and citrus fruit finish." said one tasting participant.
Someone else found an "oily texture." One taster said "It's
rough, too appley and coarse." Another taster found this to be
"Very pungent, with grapefruit and SO2,
but it's subtle, intense and has a long finish. It's a big-scaled
wine." Someone found a "toasty nose," while another person
found this to be "tart and bitter...mean and green...bitter and almost
salty."
I found this to be mildly toasty with a woodsy note and a lot of batonnage in
evidence here (that's where they stir the lees or yeast sediment on a periodic
basis). The wine really has a lovely balance of leesy, smoky notes and
fruit. I found this to be rather full and rich on the palate, showing some
oak and toast. Very elegant. Can cellar nicely, too. Two
stars.
3rd Place: MARC COLIN 1999 "Les Vide Bourses"
 "This shows citrusy notes, with vanilla bean aromas, some earthy tones
and a lemon custard finish." said one critic. Another taster
applauded the "great balance, with green apple, lemons, paint-like aromas
and good acidity." Someone else felt it was "more like an
American Chardonnay, being very fruity and having an almost bubble gum-like
character." Another taster agreed, saying "It's got an almost
sweet impression like many American wines..." Someone else found
"The nose of this is the leanest, with green apple notes, but it's pleasing
on the palate." One person downgraded the wine for "not having
the finish of some of the other wines."
I found a hint of pear with appley overtones to the nose and just a faint hint
of vanilla from the oak. The same pear and apple fruit shine on the
palate, with a minerally note and a touch of oak. One star.
2nd Place: BERNARD MOREY 1999 "Les Caillerets"
Described by one taster as "...ripe, rich, sweet fruit with vanilla
cream, bread dough and smoky notes..." Someone else found this to be
"light and crisp, with lemon, citrus notes, nice oak but not
over-oaked." One person characterized it as "Exquisitely
calibrated with a really long finish." Someone else said it's
"got thick pear and earth notes...really nice wine!" Another
critic found it to have "sour apple fruit, oak and it's diffuse, not tight
and crisp as it should be."
I found hints of pear-like fruit aromas along with mildly toasty oak
notes. It shows nice intensity on the palate of these same features, with
some stony fruit notes. The finish is a bit warm, but it's still pretty
good wine. One star.
1st Place: MICHEL NIELLON 1999 "Clos Saint Jean"
 "Restrained, ripe fruit and mildly smoky oak with a hint of
herbaceousness. It's evolved nicely with cream, honey and a mildly citrusy
finish." said one critic. Another described the aromas quite
differently, regarding it as having a "huge petrol-like nose. I'm
getting used to this sort of wine, which has an opulent style."
Someone else said it's got "...the boldest nose, big,
full-blown..." Another person found "heavy oak with ashy tones
and an almost licorice-like flavor." One panel member felt it
displayed a lot of "SO2 with
charred, over-charred barrels." Someone else marked it down for
having a "short finish and it's not going to age very well."
My first descriptor was "Wow!" The wine has a gorgeous, leesy,
toasty, smoky note from a significant batonnage. It's really superb
(unless you're looking for a California Chardonnay fruit bomb). The same
notes shine brightly on the palate, the wine being leesy, woodsy, smoky and
deeply complex...it ought to go nicely for another 5-10 years.
Two-and-a-half stars.
