A Blind-Tasting Comparison

We continue to read glowing reports
and critiques of Shiraz wines from Australia, so we were curious to have a small
survey of wines currently available.
Most came from the 2002 vintage, a year which is being touted by critics and
winemakers alike. There are hundreds of acres of new plantings of Shiraz
in Australia and we read production of this wine is up by a whopping 43% from
the previous vintage! "Who is going to buy all these new
wines?" we wonder--Especially interesting when one considers the price
tags we see on many wines.
The 2002 vintage is said to have been relatively cool, which means some estates
must have had remarkably long growing seasons as most of the wines in our
tasting showed a bit of heat from the alcohol. Two wines are noted as
being 16.0% alcohol (giving new meaning to the term 'blind tasting')!
We included one wine from a very large producer, Jacob's Creek. We wanted
to see how this wine would fare against wines costing two to four times its
modest price tag.
One wine placed well ahead of the pack. My first place wine, a wine I
would not care to own or drink, frankly, was the group last place
finisher!
While I can appreciate these wines from a "tasting" perspective, I'm
not very enthused about the wines as partners for food. Many are
exceptionally high in alcohol and taste a bit 'hot,' not to mention the rather
low levels of acidity and unfermented sugar in some wines. We
"tasted" more "marketing" than "winemaking" in
this set of wines, I felt.
Bob Gorman said "These are too sweet for the dinner table and yet they're
too dry for dessert. I have no use for these wines."

HENRY'S DRIVE 2002 SHIRAZ
A few tasters wondered weather or not this was a 'corked' bottle, since
there was a curious spice note to the wine bordering on musty. One taster
found this to be "Long and spicy, with black pepper fruit. It's got a
green aspect to the nose but I thought it might be corked. Great
spice. Nice old vine Shiraz." Someone else felt "it
improved over the course of the tasting." A third critic found it
"funky on the nose with dirty aspects...reminded me of the cellar
floor."
I found mildly spicy elements on the nose with hints of pepper and grapefruit
rind. The spice character was attractive to me, though I did not think it
was 'corked.' The wine has a nice, ripe berry quality, though it's a
bit hot and harsh on the palate. I also marked it down for being a touch
sweet and yet it was my first place wine. That should tell you something
about this tasting!
7th Place: MARQUIS PHILIPS 2003 SHIRAZ "9"
One critic found this to be reminiscent of some red wines from California's
"Hecker Pass" region, noting "It's a tasty, big production wine
with notes of black licorice, anise and milk chocolate. It's soft and flat with
berry-like fruit." Another critic described it as "Syrupy and
over-extracted with white pepper notes. It's a bit reminiscent of Ojai's
White Hawk Syrah. Interesting wine." A final critic
described this as a "spineless, fat booger."
I encountered a hint of stewed fruit, with raspberry jam notes. It's
off-dry, having about a half-a-percent of residual sugar. This is
reminiscent of a Port wine, except that it's relatively dry as Ports go.
6th Place: HARE'S CHASE 2002 SHIRAZ
"This is merely burnt toast!" exclaimed one critic. Another
described this as "Brettanomyces and little else." Someone else
found it "Flat and bitter, but other than that, it's charming."
I found woodsy notes to this meaty, leathery red. It's more similar to a
Bordeaux than a Rhone. This is moderately tannic and has leathery flavors
and a bit of grip. I will not be chasing this hare.
5th Place: KILIKANOON 2002 "Killerman's Run--Sybarites Cuvee"
"I found blackberry and white pepper notes on the nose...nice blueberry
flavors and a bit of sweet tannin." said one taster. Another
described this as "Hot, with vanillin and oak, as well as blueberries and
white pepper. Not well integrated, though, nor is it
well-balanced." Someone else said "It's not sweet enough to
serve with dessert, so I don't know what to do with this wine!"
I found this to show notes of Australian Shiraz...the violets and berry fruit
notes on the nose are hallmarks of this category. It did not strike me as
bone dry and the acidity is a bit low. This is mildly tannic and has dark
fruits such as blueberries and blackberries on the palate along with a touch of
wood.
4th Place: BLACK PUMA 2002 SHIRAZ
One critic noted "Lots of trees died in making this wine. It's
just oak juice. It's got an unusual texture on the palate. I
certainly wouldn't want to own a bottle!" Someone else found it
lacking in fruit, though they encountered a "note of cherry and vanilla,
with a hint of mushroom." Another person found "a ton of oak,
but also fragrances of Santa Rosa plums, white pepper and some jam.
There's bitter chocolate here, plus some strawberry notes. It's tannic but
not bitter."
I found something really strange in this wine. It reminded me of a
fragrance one encounters in certain plastics. I also found a fruit quality
which reminded me of San Benito County-grown Zinfandels of decades ago.
It's a big, tannic, tough red wine but of no more complexity than a simple
"Spaghetti red."
3rd Place: TWO WAY RANGE 2003 SHIRAZ
One taster wondered if this was "Robitussin cough medicine, or
what? It's sweet and bitter. Luscious and grapy...a potential
crowd-pleaser. But it's over-pressed and is a big, deep red
wine." Someone else found it "Lactic on the nose and
palate. It's quite alcoholic, too, not to mention being off-dry."
I found this to be very berryish and showing a nice fruity fragrance reminding
me of some youthful Piemontese Dolcetto wines. It's got a fair bit of heat
and is quite fruity on the palate, but the alcohol and tannin are
bothersome. A good Dolcetto costs less than $20, by the way.
2nd Place: JACOB'S CREEK 2001 Reserve SHIRAZ
"This is a simple red wine showing sweet blueberry fruit, along with
notes of tangy, bitter chocolate. It's really nice!" said one
critic. Someone else faulted it for being a "Light wine with a bit of
tannin masking the fruit. It's got a hint of citrus and a funky spice
note. Simple red wine." Another taster found it
"Under-fruited as the oak dominates on all levels. It's sharp, hollow
and alcoholic."
I found notes of berries. Blueberries and raspberries with a lightly
cedary tone. It's low in acidity and possibly off-dry. I found it a
bit hot on the palate and just a big, ripe, rather undistinguished red wine.
1st Place: TORZI MATTHEWS 2002 "Frost Dodger" SHIRAZ
"There's fruit on the nose with notes of eucalyptus and fairly good
depth on the palate. It's balanced, too." said one taster.
Another found "Cola and cola berry and sweet, black currant fruit.
There's a sweet plum notes and some bitter tannins here." A third
critic found "Bitter raspberry notes. It's simple and fell apart
during the tasting."
I encountered some mildly berryish fragrances reminding me of raspberries.
I thought it had a touch of sweetness and was a simple, little red wine with too
much heat and too much tannin.
