LATE MARCH 2009
I arrived in Germany Friday morning and Norbert drove us to Frankfurt and
the old market hall to purchase some provisions for dinner with friends that
evening...
As usual, the market was filled with many attractive
foods...
Gaby had been preparing the place for a special evening
with Josef & Uli and The Boniferini family.
A few nibbles to go with the Champagne...
Josef, Uli and Gaby hoist a glass of Champagne...
Claus, Elena and Anette.
We began the dinner with Gaby's home-cured salmon...
Two good Rieslings matched well with this...one from Von Buhl and the other from
the Zusslin family in Alsace.
Josef enjoyed a sip...
...as did the Lachs-Meisterin.
Next course was a fantastic risotto with tomatoes and
shrimps.
The Jamek winery has a crisp, dry, mildly spicy Grüner Veltliner, while Sanct
Valentin's Pinot Grigio also had an element of spice to it.
Someone mentioned the risotto may need salt & pepper...
With racks of lamb roasting in the oven, Norbert opened a
couple of good reds...
Claus, meanwhile, was busy trying to figure out how to use
the camera.
Gaby
prepared a wonderful dessert to pair with the Port...
And
then there were some schnapps bottles on the table, along with some more
chocolate!
The
party was a great success and I was in need of some schlaffen, due to jet lag.
The next day, we ventured to the Franken region to taste some Silvaner wines.
And
in the evening we had an informal meal at the major brewery in the town of
Seligenstadt.
After
dinner we drove to the Bauer's house and Josef opened some wines.
Especially
good was the Crusius Riesling...
And
the next morning I took a train to a German wine fair and then it was a short
flight to Verona for VinItaly, a wonderfully chaotic 5 days.
