The Allegrini family started making wine in 1854. Over the years they've certainly
"perfected" the recipes, as today they're one of the elite estates in the
Veneto.
Though they do grow some white grapes in their 70 hectares of vineyards, the Allegrini
label is seen exclusively on red wines.
Photos: The exceptionally clean and well-maintained cellars has these old,
traditional casks, but a fair number of new, small French oak barriques as well.

In addition to their modern, fresh, fruity Valpolicella, the Allegrinis make "La
Grola," a blend of 70% Corvina, 20% Rondinella with 5% each of Syrah and
Sangiovese!
"Palazzo della Torre" is 70% Corvina, 25% Rondinella and 5%
Sangiovese.
"La Poja" is made entirely of Corvina Veronese and
it's matured in new French oak barrels. It is an exceptional red wine, easily on par with
a good Cabernet Sauvignon. The texture of the wine is a bit more supple and round compared
to many Cabernets. The fragrances from the wood are cedary and with sweet spices: nutmeg,
clove and a hint of cinnamon.
The entire range of wines is impressive.
I am not a big fan of Amarone wines, since most exhibit rusticity with an emphasis on
'rust.' Allegrini makes a marvelously clean and rather bright wine, avoiding the oxidized,
rather raisiny notes of so many Amarone wines. I am certain some people will tell me that
those are the "classic" elements of Amarone, but I prefer wines which don't
exhibit the spoilage notes of excessive amounts of volatile acidity.
If I need rubbing alcohol, I can buy that at the pharmacy...I hate to pay a premium price
for a wine which is better suited to cleansing a wound than to pouring in a wine glass.
Our hostess and tour guide was intrigued when one of my Crazy
Milanese pals mentioned this web site.
Francesca excused herself for a moment, exiting for the office where she and "La
Boss" had a quick peek.
They were delighted to have read our assessments of several of their wines.
