2003 BAROLO
Barolo is made entirely of Nebbiolo and it's
grown in the whole municipal territory of Barolo, Castiglione Falletto
and Serralunga d'Alba and part of La Morra, Novello, Monforte d'Alba,
Verduno, Grinzane Cavour, Diano d'Alba, Roddi and Cherasco.
The wine must be aged for three years from January 1st following the
harvest and the wine must spend at least two years in wood.
When the wine reaches its fifth year, it magically becomes a
"Riserva."

Famous wineries such as Giacomo
Conterno, Aldo Conterno, Gaja, Clerico, Altare and Bruno Giacosa do not
participate, but we still managed to find many very good wines.
These wines are rated on a three star scale
and I've not included wines which were standard quality or "no
stars" in my notes here...
I like traditionally-styled, "old school"
Barolo, but I also appreciate a modern approach to the subject as
well. As a result, I don't really have a bias for a particular
kind of wine. Further, I don't mind if wines lack longevity.
Many critics prize (more highly) wines with good aging potential.
Given that the hot vintage of 2003 produced many wines with
lower-than-normal levels of acidity, I can appreciate Barolo which is a
bit more forward and accessible in its youth. |
SOBRERO (Francesco &
Figli)
2003 Barolo |
Nice,
old-fashioned Barolo. Lightly tarry fragrances and it's showing a
bit of maturity on the nose. Probably a bit too precocious to have
extended cellaring potential. Drink now-2014+.
 |
BOROLI
2003 Barolo
"Villero" |
Nice cherry
and berry notes with good, youthful tannins. There's some elegance
and refinement to this wine which should allow it to age handsomely from
2012-2018.
 |
CASCINA ROCCA
2003 Barolo
"Villero" |
This wine
offers lightly earthy aromas and there's a fragrance suggesting a
"cellar funk", but in a good way. Deep, fragrant and
showing a woodsy note. The wine is deep and profound on the
palate. Nice texture and mildly tannic. 2012-2018.
  |
CAVALLOTTO
2003 Barolo
"Bricco Boschis" |
Classic
fragrances of cherry and dusty tones, this is a mildly tannic
Barolo. Nice fruit-to-tannin ratio. Drinkable 2012-2018+.
 |
CORDERO di
MONTEZEMELO
2003 Barolo
"Enrico VI" |
Nice ripe
fruit with an herbal overtone and a woody element. Good, firm,
mildly tannic and nicely balanced. Drink 2010-2020.
  |
VEGLIO
(Giovanni & Figli)
2003 Barolo
"Barbiasco" |
Dark cherry
and sweet vanilla bean fragrances, this is a decidedly woodsy and oaky
wine. Tannic, nicely fruity but fairly oaky at this moment.
It will take some time to integrate and develop. 2012-2020.
 |
BURLOTTO
2003 Barolo
"Acclivi" |
Mild
strawberry fruit notes with a hint of vanilla cream, this is a nicely
woodsy wine. Bright fruit on the palate and light oak.
Nicely tannic. 2010-2018.
 |
CASCINA CUCCO
2003 Barolo
"Cerrati" |
Light woodsy
notes on the nose with hints of cherryish fruit. This is a
medium-bodied, moderately tannic Barolo needing from 2015-2020 to
mature.
 |
GEMMA
2003 Barolo |
Nice dusty
cherry fragrances to this medium-bodied, firm, moderately tannic
Barolo. The fruit matches nicely with the tannin, assuring good
cellaring potential from now-2018+.
 |
GERMANO (Ettore)
2003 Barolo
"Cerretta" |
Mildly woodsy
and teeming with bright cherry fruit, Germano's wine has a nice texture
on the palate with good structure and plenty of fruit to balance the
tannin. This should do well from 2013-2022.

to |
GERMANO (Ettore)
2003 Barolo
"Serralunga" |
Cherry notes
with hints of cocoa powder. It strikes me as less complex than the
Cerretta bottling (above), but still worthy of cellaring.
2010-2018.
 |
MANZONE (Gian Paolo)
2003 Barolo
"Serralunga" |
Light cherry
notes to this simple, moderately structured Barolo. It's firm and
tannic, needing from 2015 to 2020. Good.
 |
PALLADINO
2003 Barolo
"Serralunga" |
Classic old
school Barolo, this shows lots of tarry and woodsy notes on the
nose. It's mouth-drying and mildly tannic.
Medium-bodied. Drink 2012-2017.
 |
PIO CESARE
2003 Barolo
"Ornato" |
Pio Cesare's
wine shows nice cherry fruit and some sweet oak notes. Woodsy,
basil-leaf fragrances, it's a rounder, more supple rendition than
old-styled Barolo wines. It's got enough tannin to cellar from
2012-2020.
  |
LUIGI PIRA
2003 Barolo
"Vigna Marenca" |
Mildly dusty
and showing some cherry notes on the nose, this wine quickly veers
towards the tarry end of the Barolo spectrum. Needs years of
cellaring. Drink 2012-2020+.
 |
LUIGI PIRA
2003 Barolo
"Vigna Margheria"
|
Lots of dark
cherry fruit aromas, this has a lovely nose of the Nebbiolo grape.
Nicely tannic and needing time, give this from 2012-2020+.
 |
REVERDITO (Michele)
2003 Barolo
"Serralunga" |
Here's a
modern rendition of Barolo, showing light vanilla bean fragrances and
good cherryish fruit aromas. Pretty wine, if a bit tannic.
Not classic, but good. 2012-2018+.
 |
FONTANAFREDDA
2003 Barolo |
This may not
be going into the Hall of Fame and it's certainly not a currently
fashionable estate (it's a large company), but they did make a credible,
if simple, Barolo "normale". 2012-2016+.
 |
VIETTI
2003 Barolo
"Lazzarito" |
Dark fruit
aromas, woodsy notes and a hint of espresso on the nose, this wine has
plenty of fruit to balance the tannins. Sure, it has a fair bit of
wood showing presently, but this will develop handsomely in my opinion.
2012-2022+

to |
BORGOGNO (Sergio & Battista)
2003 Barolo
"Cannubi" |
Lightly woodsy notes with
a hint of mint, there's a pleasant spice tone to this. Very good
flavors with cherry and some woodsy elements. Good
structure. Youthful. 2015-2020+
 |
BOROLI
2003 Barolo
"Cerequio" |
Very fine nose with a
mildly woodsy quality. Remarkably elegant and refined.
Woodsy on the palate but not excessive. The fruit is bright and
beautifully balances the tannins. 2010-2020+.
+ |
BREZZA
2003 Barolo
"Sarmassa" |
This estate produces a
special wine called "Bricco Sarmassa" in good vintages, but I
preferred this "normal" bottling. The Sarmassa has a
nice nose with a hint of tobacco and it blossoms in the glass, showing a
bit of oak and sweet fruit. I felt this had a bit more in the
middle than the Bricco Sarmassa bottling. Drink 2010-2018.
  |
PITTATORE SACCHETTO
Bric Cenciurio
2003 Barolo
"Costa di Rose" |
Light vanilla bean spice
tones, but not oaky, despite this woody element in the wine.
Medium-bodied. Nice cherry notes and good, firm structure.
Long finish. Nice now-2015+.
 |
BURLOTTO
2003 Barolo
"Vigneto Cannubi" |
Lightly earthy notes on
the nose. Classic. Quite good with a fine nose and nice,
light cherry tones on the nose. Certainly tannic, this has a fine,
lengthy finish. 2012-2020.
  |
CAMERANO
2003 Barolo
"Cannubi San Lorenzo" |
Hints of forest floor
fragrances and some earthy elements are the central themes of this
Barolo. Medium-bodied and nicely structured...it should fill out
with time. 2012-2020.
 |
CAMERANO
2003 Barolo |
Sweet, ripe fruit notes
with hints of orange marmalade and a touch of cinnamon spice.
Lightly earthy, too. It's less tannic than their Cannubi San
Lorenzo bottling. Drink now-2015.
 |
CASCINA ADELAIDE
2003 Barolo
"Cannubi" |
Lovely nose! Deep
and perfumed with sweet, woodsy tones. It's dry and robust on the
palate, a real mouthful! Though it's tannic, there's plenty of
stuffing. Very fine. Now-2018+
  |
CASCINA ADELAIDE
2003 Barolo
"Preda" |
This bottling is fine,
with woodsy fragrances. It's nicely balanced, if a shade less
concentrated than its Cannubi stable-mate. Nice finish.
Quite good.
 |
DAMILANO
2003 Barolo
"Liste" |
Damilano had two entries,
"Le Cinque Vigne" which was perfectly good, pleasant, if a bit
light...and this more "important" wine from the Liste
cru. The Liste wine offers dark cherry fruit and lots of nice oak,
woodsy, cedary tones. It's tannic and structured, but big, robust
and very fine. 2010-2020+.
  |
GIANNI GAGLIARDO
2003 Barolo
"Cannubi" |
I found hints of the
classic dried rose fragrance in this mildly fruity, lightly woody,
earthy Barolo. It lacks a bit of structure, having a soft 'center'
with mild tannins. Not a long-term wine. 2008-2014.
 |
ANGELO GERMANO
2003 Barolo
"Cascina S. Martino Vigna Rue" |
Sweetly oaked, this wine
shows nice vanilla tones and, while it's a bit woody on the nose, it's
nice on the palate. Fairly deep and nicely balanced. Quite
good. 2012-2018.
  |
GIACOMO GRIMALDI
2003 Barolo
"Le Coste" |
Showing floral and leafy
aromas, there's an interesting melon-like fragrance here. The
flavors don't exactly correspond to the nose, as it tastes of red fruits
such as raspberries. Quite unusual in a schizophrenic fashion, but
I found a lot to like here. 2012-2017.

to |
MARCHESI di BAROLO
2003 Barolo
"Cannubi" |
Good, typical, mildly
earthy aromas and flavors. Moderately tannic, earthy
flavors...classic...nice balance for drinking now-2018, or so. The
same producer has a bottling from the Sarmassa cru and this was lighter
and simpler...perhaps it will develop with time?
  |
E. PIRA
2003 Barolo
"Cannubi" |
Dusty, earthy, mildly
tarry notes on the nose with hints of resin. Very fine and
balanced. Nice, woodsy tones on the palate backing great
fruit. Balanced tannins, there's a robust quality to this wine
with a creamy tone on the finish. Big, showy. Superb.
Bravo! Now-2020+.

to |
LUIGI EINAUDI
2003 Barolo
"Costa Grimaldi" |
I encountered a mildly
appley fragrance here with cherryish notes. Nice texture on the
palate...good balance and a very pretty wine. It shows good
potential, too as the structure seems fine for cellaring from 2012-2020.
  |
LUIGI EINAUDI
2003 Barolo
"Nei Cannubi" |
This wine is deeper and
darker than the Einaudi Costa Grimaldi (above). Earthy fragrances
with a faint tar tone and some pretty forest floor fragrances make for a
nicely complex Barolo. It's got a good tannic structure and will
need patience for it to evolve. 2012-2025.

to |
GIUSEPPE RINALDI
2003 Barolo
"Brunate-Le Coste" |
Bright fruit notes here,
this wine displaying a hint of tar and a floral tone. Good.
More refined on the palate than many, as it seems a tad 'gentler' and
more elegant than many of the wines in this line-up. Quite
"fine" and classically styled. 2010-2018+.
+ |
SANDRONE (Luciano)
2003 Barolo
"Cannubi Boschis" |
Lovely nose...charming
cherry and hints of raspberry on the aroma. It's sweetly oaked,
but not excessively so (for my taste...I'm certain some people find any
noticeable wood to be a defect). Nicely intense on the palate with
a fine balance of dark fruits and wood. Sandrone manages to tame
the tannins of Nebbiolo quite nicely, too. Pretty now, but this
will be even better from 2012-2020.
   |
G D VAJRA
2003 Barolo
"Bricco delle Viole" |
Bright cherry notes and
some floral tones make for a nicely complex nose. The wine is
quite dry and refined on the palate, being elegant and cherryish.
The tannins will take some time to resolve, so waiting for this from
2015-2020 is probably about right. I suspect it will warrant a
higher 'score' at that time than I'm giving it presently.
  |
VIRNA (Borgogno)
2003 Barolo
"Cannubi Boschis" |
Mildly earthy with light
spice tones, there's a leathery, meaty aspect to the nose of this
wine. Medium-full on the palate, this is a tannic, tough, rugged
wine. 2012-2020+
 |
VIRNA (Borgogno)
2003 Barolo
"Preda Sarmassa" |
I suppose their Cannubi
Boschis is their "classic" cuvee and this is their "new
wave", oak cuvee. Still, I like the fruity aspect of the wine
and don't mind this level of cedary wood. Very pretty.
Tannic and showy. 2012-2020+
  |
SANDRONE (Luciano)
2003 Barolo
"Le Vigne" |
Bright fruit, modern,
fresh red fruit notes on the nose with berries and cherries. It's
an elegant and refined wine, perhaps a shade less complex and intense
than their Cannubi Boschis wine. Still, this has good structure
and nice, balanced tannins. Fine.
2010-2018+
  |
BARTOLO MASCARELLO
2003 Barolo
"Cannubi, San Lorenzo, Rue and Rocche" |
Very fine perfume with
lightly resiny tones and a touch of an earthy character. The nose
is terrific. Moderately tannic, this is elegant and lengthy on the
palate. If you want to know what "terroir" is, this wine
is a great example of "Barolo". Wonderful wine.
Now-2020.
   |
ALESSANDRIA CRISSANTE
2003 Barolo
"Roggeri" |
You might fault this wine
for having little aging potential, since it strikes me as nearly fully
evolved, but if you enjoy "old" Barolo with lots of the tarry
fragrances the Piemontese call "goudron," you'll want to try
this. Earthy, tarry and big, ripe and rich. Now-2012.
  |
EUGENIO BOCHINO
2003 Barolo
"La Serra" |
Very fine on the nose
with nice woodsy and tarry tones. Medium-full bodied, tannic and
nice acidity. This is stylish and quite typical, with good
cellaring potential. 2012-2020.
  |
EUGENIO BOCCHINO
2003 Barolo
"Lu" |
Mildly cherryish fruit,
this is less expressive than their La Serra wine. It's a
medium-bodied Barolo with firm tannins and probably needs more time to
blossom. At this stage I prefer their other bottling, but time
will tell. 2012-2018.
 |
CASCINA CASANOVA
2003 Barolo
"La Serra" |
Very intensely gamey and
a bit meaty with tarry notes and a mildly smoky element. Complex
nose and the flavors follow suit: deep, dark fruit and notes of cacao
and black cherry with woodsy undertones. Lengthy and showy.
2012-2022+
   |
MICHELE CHIARLO
2003 Barolo
"Cerequio" |
Intensely aromatic, with
fragrances of sweet licorice and mint. Very stylish. Nice
tannic structure and a curious eucalyptus character on the palate.
2010-2018.

to |
MICHELE CHIARLO
2003 Barolo
"Cannubi" |
This wine is more
classically-styled than the resiny wine cited above. It's got
mildly loamy, earthy notes and it's nicely tannic and lengthy on the
palate. I detect a hint of a woodsy element, too. Quite
good. 2012-2020.
  |
GIOVANNI CORINO
2003 Barolo
"Vigna Giachini" |
Mild berry
aromas with a hint of anise and a touch of a leafy element are the
aromatics in this soft, more supple, approachable Barolo. It has
nice fruit and is probably best now-2013, or so.
 |
GIOVANNI
CORINO
2003 Barolo
"Vigneto Arborina" |
Mildly dusty
notes on the nose give way to berry and cherry fruit. There's a
nice hint of oak, too. It's a deeper, more structured wine than
the Vigna Giachini bottling (above). Elegant. 2010-2018+
  |
RENATO CORINO
2003 Barolo
"Rocche" (La Morra) |
There's a
mildly vegetal tone to start, followed by some woodsy elements and a bit
of brown spice. The wine is fairly deep and rich on the palate,
with good tannin for 5-12 years. Now-2019+.

to |
AURELIO
SETTIMO
2003 Barolo
"Rocche" (La Morra) |
Settimo had
its normal bottling with was of standard quality. The Rocche wine
is also an "old school" wine. It's already a bit brown
on the robe and shows a lightly spiced cherry fruit aroma. The
wine seems a bit light and superficial...this is not a long-distance
runner. Now-2014.
to |
FRATELLI
FERRERO
2003 Barolo
"Manzoni" |
Here's a
modern styled wine showing toasty oak, vanillin fragrances and a woodsy
aspect to the nose. It's mildly tannic and the flavors have hints
of cocoa and dark chocolate. Now-2015+.
 |
MARIO
GAGLIASSO
2003 Barolo
"Rocche dell'Annunziata" |
I preferred
this bottling to Gagliasso's "Torriglione" (which was more
herbal and olive-like). There's a hint of berry-like fruit along with a
cherry note. A bit tannic...
2010-2020.
 |
MARIO MARENGO
2003 Barolo
"Brunate" |
Showing a
touch of a woodsy element, there's a nice hint of cocoa here, too.
Some spice box tones add interest to the nose. Tannic and
big. 2012-2020+
 |
CORDERO di
MONTEZEMELO
2003 Barolo
"Monfalletto" |
Nice Nebbiolo
aromas, displaying bright cherry fruit and a lightly dusty tone. I
found a hint of a woodsy tone. Medium-bodied. Nicely
balanced. This demands further cellaring. 2015-2022.
 |
MARCO OBERTO
Ciabot Berton
2003 Barolo
"Roggeri, Bricco San Biagio, Rive" |
This is a
nice example of a classic style of Barolo. Hints of resiny and
tarry notes on the nose and palate with substantial, coarse tannins.
Drink 2012-2018.
 |
MARCO OBERTO
Ciabot Berton
2003 Barolo
"Roggeri" |
More woodsy
and oaky than Oberto's 3 vineyard blend, I found nice dark cherry fruit
in this tannic, robust Barolo. Drink 2015-2020.
 |
RENATO RATTI
2003 Barolo
"Marcenasco" |
Spicy and
peppery, this is a bit unusual for Barolo, but still was a wine of
interest and complexity. Mildly resiny, with woodsy flavors, the
tannin/fruit balance is good. Drink 2012-2020.
  |
RENATO RATTI
2003 Barolo
"Rocche Marcenasco" |
This is even
more spicy and peppery than the basic "Marcenasco" bottling
(above). The flavors are of pepper to the point that I wondered if
this was a Rhone-styled wine. Cote-Rocche, perhaps? It's
quite unusual and quirky, but deep, robust and intense. Drink
2012-2020.
???
+ |
REVELLO
2003 Barolo
"Vigna Conca" |
Lots of nice
vanillin notes on the nose with bright, floral tones. Fruity and a
hint of anise. Charming and elegant. Lots of finesse here in
this modern-styled Barolo. Now-2018+

2003 Barolo
"Vigna Giachini" |
Similarly
styled to the Vigna Conca bottling (above), this wine also sports pretty

RIVETTO DAL
1902
2003 Barolo
"Leon" |
Dusty, earthy
and lightly tarry notes on the nose, this is a perfectly pleasant,
medium-bodied, typically classic style of Barolo. Nice.
2010-2018.
 |
ROCCHE
COSTAMAGNA
2003 Barolo
"Rocche dell'Annuziata" |
Mildly herbal
tones, this is a classic, old-school Barolo. It's a bit light, but
nicely made and needing a few years to blossom. 2010-2018.
 |
ROCCHE
COSTAMAGNA
2003 Barolo
"Bricco Francesco" |
More floral
and woodsy than their 'regular' bottling (above), this is a deeper, more
structured Barolo. It's medium-full bodied and a more flashy
wine. 2010-2020.
  |
TENUTA
L'ILLUMINATA
2003 Barolo
"Tebavio" |
Woodsy notes
at first, followed by some earthy tones, Nicely tannic and it has
some good cherry fruit at the core with light oak. 2010-2018.
 |
MAURO VEGLIO
2003 Barolo
"Rocche dell'Annuziata" |
Nice cherry
tones and some vanilla bean fragrances on the nose with a mildly floral
quality. It's a tannic, deep, nicely-structured Barolo.
Good. 2012-2020+.
  |
VIETTI
2003 Barolo
"Brunate" |
Lots of black
cherry fruit on the nose with a mildly oaky quality. This is quite
deep and nicely balanced on the palate in terms of fruit/tannin.
Very fine. Some power but not coarse...elegant.
  |
ELVIO COGNO
2003 Barolo
"Ravera" |
Mildly earthy
fragrances with a hint of a leathery note on the nose, this is a
medium-bodied Barolo with modest aging potential. Drink 2010-2015.
 |
GIACOMO
GRIMALDI
2003 Barolo
"Sotto Castello di Novello" |
Nice woodsy
fragrances with cedary overtones and a light cherry fruit. It's a
very aggressive and coarse wine. Quite tannic and requiring much
patience. 2015-2025.
  |
PODERE
RUGGERI CORSINI
2003 Barolo
"Corsini" |
Good,
classically-styled Barolo. It starts out simply and blossomed
nicely with time in the glass. It shows a bit of oak and is a
nice, medium-bodied wine. Now-2018+.

GIANFRANCO
ALESSANDRIA
2003 Barolo |

fruit. Lots of red fruit notes. Moderately tannic and good
intensity. Pretty wine. Elegant. 2010-2018.
  |
GIANFRANCO
ALESSANDRIA
2003 Barolo
"San Giovanni" |
Lots of
vanillin notes and sweet wood tones on the nose with fruity, berry
elements, too. It's a bit aggressively tannic at this stage, but
has lots of stuffing and should be fine.
2012-2025.

CASCINA
BALLARIN
2003 Barolo
"Bussia" |
Woodsy,
earthy fragrances with some vanilla bean notes...I also found a hint of
rhubarb. Medium-bodied, good extract and balanced tannins.
Needs time. 2012-2020.

2003 Barolo
"Mont d'Oca Dardi" |
Lightly
woodsy notes on the nose with good cherry fruit. This is a
youthful, tannic wine with good cellaring potential. Medium+
bodied. Good fruit of the Nebbiolo and nice winemaking, too.
Drink 2012-2020.

ELIO GRASSO
2003 Barolo
"Ginestra Casa Mate" |
This wine was
a bit closed, finally showing a note of strawberry jam when it sat in
the glass for a while. Hints of a dusty tone, too.
Medium-bodied, tannic and needing time to blossom. 2012-2022+

the wine should age nicely from now-2015+

TENUTA ROCCA
2003 Barolo |
Here's a wine

ABBONA
2003 Barolo
"Pressenda" |
I found a
curious array of fragrances, from strawberries to mint to basil
leaves! It's a curious wine with lots of angles and aspects.
Lots of flavor, with light to medium tannins. I don't think it's a
wine for extended cellaring. Now-2013, perhaps.

MAURO VEGLIO
2003 Barolo
"Castelletto" |
Showing a
dusty element, this wine has some woodsy tones, too. It's a
medium-bodied Barolo with a faintly cherryish fruit character.
Medium-bodied. 2012-2015.

PIO CESARE
2003 Barolo |
Here's a
storied winery with a remarkably modern-styled wine. Some tasters
will fault this for not having much in common with "old
school" Barolo and they're correct. But there's probably room
in the market for a wine to bridge the gap between New World Cabernets
and old-school Barolo. This has lots of sweet wood and a
high-toned fruit. Charming, mild tannins, drinkable now.
Good wine but it's not easily recognizable as Barolo.
