ON THE WINE ROADS OF
FRANCE WITH
CHARLES NEAL

A 2006 Excursion
Page 4 |
We awoke the following morning in the town of Cassis. They pronounce it
"cah-see" and it rhymes with Paris (pah-ree).

A boat named Cassis in the marina of Cassis.
We were awake and out the door at an early hour and found a rather active
farmer's market being set up in town...

Choux Fleurs.

Cheese.

Soap.

The famous Jeff Berlin at the Poissonnerie Jeff.
"One man's fish is another man's poisson!"
We drove back to the Barbanau estate to have a look at their
cellar and vineyards.

Grenache.

This is something we in the wine business deal with routinely.
We had a taste of the 2005 Ros.

Sophie Cerciello and her husband Didier Simonini.

We then motored up to the Rhne Valley.

The ros was freshly bottled and delicious.

We then drove to Beaumes de Venise to visit the Saint Amant
estate.

Hard to believe we're visiting during the winter!

Jacques Wallut of Saint Amant.

Then we drove to the nearby producer....Domaine du Grand
Montmirail.

Then we motored over to Domaine Roger Perrin to meet Luc
Perrin, famous producer of Ctes du Rhnes and Chateauneufs.

Luc Perrin.

Old Vines.

Tasting in the cellar.

Some years ago when I visited, Luc asked if we wanted to taste
some older bottle of wine and we, of course, said "Yes!"
He brought out an un-labeled bottle and I correctly identified the 1978 vintage.

Now I was on the spot again.
"1981." was my guess.
Correct!

Old bottles and new...
We then drove to our hotel in Sainte Ccile les Vignes. The place had a
small restaurant and we had a simple meal and ordinary wine, sadly.

After a good snooze, we drove to the Ctes du Ventoux.
