UN MATRIMONIO IN TOSCANA
GIAMPAOLO & FRANCESCA
The phone rang in February or March, I
think. It was my dear friend Giampaolo Chiettini, famous Italian winemaker
and consulting winemaker who's living near Florence.
"Francesca and I are getting married in the summer. We hope you can
come to the wedding."
I thought about going to Europe and taking my 13 year old nephew, Brian, for his
first European adventure. In May we booked the tickets and were heading
for Europe in early July. By mid-month we were to be in Tuscany for a
On a Friday night in July, after a day of winetasting in Montalcino, we were
invited to dinner at a wonderful little agriturismo place in the Chianti region.
We had dined at this place a year, or
so, ago and owner/chef Magli Vieri prepared a memorable Tuscan feast. We
were looking forward to this evening of wine and food.
There were some nice little nibbles out on the tables near the main house.
We opened a 1992 Franciacorta of Bellavista in magnum. This wine had been
disgorged in 1997, so it was about 8 years on the cork! Still, it was
excellent, toasty and creamy.
That's Giampaolo's father Francesco behind the glass of wine and his Mom, Sylvia
(Queen of Canederli) next to him.
Soon, Signor Vieri had the pasta course ready to serve.
Giampaolo was ready to help dish out the pasta.
This was a delicious pasta...Papparadelle!
Very much this is "soul food." The Montecorboli 2001 red wine
was a lovely match for this!
Father of the bride and the bride, Francesca.
Mama of the bride.
My nephew Brian was delighted by all this fantastically good Tuscan
cooking. The main plate was a mix of roasted potatoes, sausages and meats.
The chef de cuisine.
Next Signor Vieri brought out a couple of desserts.
Giampaolo brought out a "fiasco" jug of grappa...
The evening was filled with good food and good cheer...And so we managed to find the
road back to Castello Masi in Tavarnelle...
Tomorrow is the Big Day!
TO THE NEXT DAY...THE WEDDING
