2004 CALIFORNIA PINOT NOIRS
A Blind-Tasting Comparison
June 21, 2006
Notes by
Gerald Weisl
Thanks to the movie "Sideways," Santa Barbara Pinot
Noir is "hot." But we cannot attribute this heat exclusively to
the film, but to winemakers seeking high numerical scores from various critics.
So many vintners are harvesting fruit at a potential alcohol level of 15+
percent, the wines routinely show some heat on the palate!
In a previous tasting survey, I was disappointed in the set of wines we had
evaluated, but found an article from The Wine Spectator's Jim Laube who was
delighted with the wines. I realized, though, that Mr. Laube seems to
measure every wine using Cabernet Sauvignon as the yardstick. When the
wines had Syrah-like colors and Cabernet tannins, he was impressed. But
Laube is not alone in his preference for massive red wines, even when the wines
are made of the normally more delicate, elegant and refined variety of Pinot
Noir.
In this tasting we had seven wines from the Santa Barbara area and one from
Sonoma. This was a difficult tasting as, for me, nothing really stood out
as a "great" bottle of Pinot Noir. The wines were aimed in
the direction of "big" and "powerful" (I don't think any of
the wines was below 14% alcohol). Most are rather low in acidity and/or
they have a slight bit of unfermented residual sugar.
Two or three wines were a bit ahead of the pack and a couple of wines were
lagging behind the group. Even so, the range was rather narrow since the
wines were fairly evenly matched. Six wines received a first place vote,
while five of the set had at least one last place tally.
Ellen, Bob and I all had the same wine as our top choice. Too bad the
price is a ridiculous $79 a bottle.
We wonder if the vintners making these "fruit bombs" actually enjoy
drinking these wines or are these simply for "show" and
"point-scoring" critics.

8th Place: BELLE GLOS 2004 "Clark &
Telephone" PINOT NOIR
One taster found this to be "musty and mushroomy, with pungent, moldy
notes and it's off balance." Someone else thought it might be
re-fermenting in the bottle, having a bit of CO2
and a cloudy appearance. "It's a bit sweet and has hydrogen sulfide,
too." they said. A couple of tasters mentioned
"ammonia-like" notes, one saying "It's awful and strange,"
and the other finding "rubber, plastic and H2S."
Two other critics found "green or vegetal tones," and another person
mentioned "stewed tomatoes and rhubarb." Ellen questioned
if this was not a Syrah.
I found some Asian spices on the nose and a hint of pepper. It's difficult
to call this Pinot Noir. The nutmeg and clove spice notes show up on the
palate and the wine is hardly a replica of Burgundy. I was not as offended
by this as were some tasters, but it's not going into the hall of fame,
certainly. No stars here on my three star scale.

7th Place: KEN BROWN 2004 "Clos Pepe"
PINOT NOIR
"Nice Gamay!" said one critic, adding "there's no Pinot
Noir here. None. Zero. Nothing." Someone else
termed this "Awful," while another taster felt it "had the best
structure in the tasting." Another person panned this for "being
short on the palate." A few other descriptors included
"Jujubes," "cherry syrup" and "candied red fruit."
I like this wine as a simple, cru Beaujolais-level sort of wine. It's got
lots of lovely primary aromas with ripe raspberry notes dominating. The
wine has a bit more structure than it needs given all this lovely Gamay-like
fruit. I rated it third on the strength of its drinkability more than
anything to do with complexity or varietal character. One star for
drinkability.
I checked the winery web site and here's their description:
This Pinot Noir balances pure fruit expression with superb structure and rich tannins. Concentrated aromas of ripe blackberry and black plum combine with a touch of blueberry and black pepper. The flavors, including hints of blackberry and black licorice, are enveloped in an opulent mid-palate which culminates in a resonating finish. This wine promises excellent development of flavor and complexity with additional cellaring. ONLY 163 CASES PRODUCED.

6th Place: FOLEY 2004 "Pommard Clone"
PINOT NOIR
"This wine is short and hot. High in alcohol, it's big and
thick, with little varietal character." said one critic. Another
taster detected "tobacco" in this wine. Someone else found
"Cherries, smoky notes and a bacony character. It's full, round and
fleshy with a hint of tar. Bitter and flat." Another taster
noted "Smoky, spicy elements in a medium-bodied red with cherries and a
smoky flavor."
I keyed on the mildly toasty oak here, finding a touch of cherry fruit
underneath. The wine is rather robust and has a mildly aggressive tannic
bite. It's also a tad hot, the fruit being really ripe and the acidity is
not especially high. I gave it a one star rating and had it as my second
place wine...damning by faint praise.

5th Place: SEA SMOKE 2004 "Southing"
PINOT NOIR
"Nice mocha and black cherry fruit here, with good stuffing."
said one panel member. Another critic felt the nose improved over the
course of the tasting. One taster claimed the wine "Started off
harshly and shows its alcohol. It stayed hot." Another taster
wondered if this had some residual sugar and offered that it has "bitter
tannins."
I found some nice sweet oak on the nose and a woodsy aspect to the
bouquet. This took on more the character of pencil shavings.
Initially this was showing warm, ripe notes of fruit. It is a bit hot on
the palate and seemed flat, finally. I don't think it has great aging
potential as the wine seems to have a hint of sweetness and low acidity.
It's probably worthy of a half star rating, getting some style points.

4th Place: RUSSIAN HILL 2004 "Tara
Vineyard" PINOT NOIR
Our one North Coast entrant in this tasting, one critic described this
as "Lovely and elegant. I wish more Pinot Noirs were made in this
style." Someone else characterized this as "a honey of a
wine. Elegant." Other tasters were less thrilled, one finding
"hydrogen sulfide notes in this wine." Another critic said
"It's flat and the bouquet is less than attractive."
There were light cherry aromas wafting from this glass and I found a hint of
vanilla from the oak. It seemed a bit hot on the palate and had decent
cherry fruit. It's a simple, "nice" wine, with a year or two of
aging potential. It's not a grand vin, but simple, easy Pinot
Noir. I gave this a single star rating.

3rd Place: AMBULLNEO 2004 "Bulldog Reserve"
PINOT NOIR
Some tasters were on board with this wine and some tasters were
not! One person found it "Sulfury and stinky, with weedy, dusty
notes. It's got tar, smoked meat tones and a sour, citrusy finish with
elements of bitter chocolate." Another critic found it "Muddy,
cloudy and sour." Someone else found "leafy, weedy and herbal
tones." One panel member mentioned its "finish is hot, alcoholic
and tart." Ellen termed this "balanced."
I liked the nice cherry fruit and Asian spice notes. I likened some of the
tones to clove and hickory. Most interesting on the nose. It's
fairly intense, without being Syrah-like as are many Santa Barbara Pinots these
days. It's got some power, certainly, but it's a good wine. The near
$80 price tag is a shame...I don't find it that exceptional. It
measures about $40-$50 on my taste-o-meter, given today's ambitiously-priced
wine market. One star.

2nd Place: LAETITIA 2004 "Reserve" PINOT
NOIR
"This wine is big, woody and slightly over-oaked," said one
critic, who also termed this "charming." Another panel member
found "cocoa powder on the nose." A third person detected "lingonberry
and bitter chocolate," while a fourth taster noted "spicy and dark
chocolate notes." Another person said "The wood is decidedly
cedary," while a final taster mentioned the wine as being "sweet and
having a touch of residual sugar."

1st Place: FOLEY 2004 "Clone 2-A" PINOT
NOIR
"Here's a wine that's like velvet. Smooth and with a long,
long finish." said one critic. Another taster felt this had a bit of
residual sugar. Someone else encountered "Smoky, tobacco notes with
cherry tobacco tones. It's a bit tannic, too." A final critic
found "Sour cherry fruit in this elegant Pinot Noir." Ellen
described it as "pruney."
I found some cherry and berry aromas. It's pleasantly fruity on the
nose. On the palate it was big and seemed a bit ripe to me. Cherry
fruit and a bit of heat. It also seemed a bit sweet and I'm estimating
it's about 7 or 8 grams per liter of sugar.
